April 24th: Penrhiwceiber Rangers 0 v Ton Pentre 3
Ton Pentre were without a number of key players due to injury and work commitments, with only 11 fit players available there was a sense of unease amongst the supporters, at the end of the game this was unjustified with a creditable 3-0 win.
The game opened with 'ceiber chasing and trying to unsettle the Ton team, this was to continue for the first 10 minutes. Although they were able to get the ball forward from free kicks and the occasional corner there was no penetration and the away defence were more than capable of dealing with the attacks. In the early stages Lowe and Richards were prominent for the home side.
When the game settled after 10 minutes Ton started to take control and played the ball on the ground through the midfield. The only problems Ton were getting were from themselves by giving the ball away. Mid way through the half, Ton started to ask questions of 'ceiber with a number of corners on the left and right with Fackeral putting in some very good crosses. The front two of Ton Withers and Brown worked hard up front without being able to get in behind the home defence.
The half continued with Ton in control, the defence of Jones, Keepings, Olden and James were playing well. Hughes, Withers and Brown did get a number of shots in on goal. The breakthrough came in stoppage time of the first half. A great move down the Ton left with Brown beating two defenders passing to Harding to cross to Withers who was there to slot home a well deserved goal (45). The end of the half was all Ton and the referee blew up with 4 minutes of stoppage time played.
From the re-start 'ceiber went "at" Ton, they forced a number of corners and a superb effort from 25 yards by Lowe went just over the cross bar with Ellacott moving quickly to cover his goal. Penrhiwceiber were really pressing and putting themselves about to unsettle the Ton players. Ton were by now in complete control and putting 5+6 passes together, making the home side move from side to side. In the 57th minute Ton were unlucky not to go 2 up when Hughes hit the foot of the post with a cross goal shot, the ball was cleared by 'ceiber.
'Ceiber were trying to hit Ton on the break, Morris, Davies and Prygodzicz were not troubled and they were playing the ball forward and were keeping the home side in their half. Even with all this possession Ton were still not able to get the second goal to kill of a spirited Penrhiwceiber. Then in the 71st minute Ellacott brought off the save of the game when Parker and Richards linked for the latter to get a low shot in on goal. Ellacott did superbly to dive low to his right and parry the ball around the post for a corner; this kept Ton in the game.
Following this scare Ton kept control of the ball and at one stage they passed the ball 11 times without 'ceiber getting near the ball. Then in the 77th minute another flowing move ending with Withers playing the ball wide to Tapper; where he hit his shot into the far top corner of the goal, giving Trinder no chance. Taking Ton into a well deserved 0-2 lead.
The game continued with 'ceiber hitting Ton on the break with Parker trying beat Ellacott from 30 yards. Ton were now in a relaxed and confident mood and were playing the ball all around the field and were looking for another opening. Then Withers got his second and Ton's 3rd in the 86th minute. A free kick 25 yards in front of the home sides goal was taken by Withers who fired and unstoppable shot past Trinder.
The game ended with Ton keeping possession and Penrhiwceiber a well-beaten side. This was a great performance by the current league champions; with 3 games left they must take 9 points and hope Ponterdawe slip up in their run in.
