BRYNTIRION ATHLETIC 0 - 2 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 18th August 2007
Ton Pentre maintained their 100% record to the start of the season with a win at Bryntirion Athletic. Their opponents proved to be tough to overcome but second half pressure eventually led to the Rhondda Bulldogs scoring two goals.
In the first half Ton were unable to stamp their authority on the match and failed to put the Bryntirion goalkeeper under any kind of pressure.
Ton were denied a penalty kick in the 12th minute of the match by the referee after Andrew Hughes was tripped in the box. He had linked up well with Alyn Jones and having ran onto a through ball on the right of the box he was unlawfully stopped, which prevented him from cutting the ball back to a team mate.
Shaky defending allowed Bryntirion to create a few chances during the half. From a free kick on the left the home team heaped pressure on Ton when Jonathan Cuss headed towards goal but the ball deflected wide of the post.
Ton’s best chance came at the end of the half when Christian Orchard sent the ball from the right of the field over to the left, where Richard Carter took it forward. Carter passed to Jones but his strike went painstakingly over Alain Fouanguim’s crossbar.
Kevin Richards made several substitutions during the second half by introducing Ryan Shugar, Ashley Evans and Dane Williams. These changes freshened the line-up and helped to improve the overall performance.
Ton were now creating chances and beginning to play better football. They came close the scoring when Hughes and Jones linked well to provide Williams with a chance to shoot outside the box. His strongly hit effort just scraped wide of the right post.
In the 74th minute Ton put Bryntirion under more pressure and won a corner for their efforts. When the ball was sent into the box Fouanguim was unable to claim as he was beaten to it by Hughes. The midfielders’ header deflected into the back of the net to give Ton the lead.
Ton doubled their lead 3 minutes later when Williams’ pressure lead to a defensive mistake when following his strike the ball hit the goalkeeper and rebounded off a defender and over the goal line.
The two goal win has seen Ton Pentre take maximum points from their opening three fixtures. The Bulldogs are now faced with two tough home matches against Ento Aberaman on Wednesday 22nd August (7.30pm) and Afan Lido on Saturday 25th August (2.30pm).
