CAERLEON 0 - 0 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 26th January 2008
Both Caerleon and Ton Pentre played out a drab 0-0 draw at Cold Bath Road with neither team creating any clear-cut opportunities to score. However, the result keeps the Rhondda Bulldogs second in Welsh League Division One.
Caerleon have now taken 4 points off Ton Pentre this season and with their games in hand on teams above them could very well be hot on the heels of the title chasing pack.
As the Bulldogs found out at Ynys Park in November Caerleon are certainly no pushovers and are a much tougher outfit to play against in comparison to past seasons.
Much of the play in this game was in midfield and both teams battled hard on a difficult playing surface that restricted the quality of the football.
Although Caerleon looked dangerous on the break, the Rhondda club probably had the better chances of the first half.
From a corner kick the ball was sent long to the far side of the 18 yard box where it was met by Mattie Davies. He passed the ball back into the penalty area where Scott Hayward directed the ball towards goal. The slow shot left former Garw goalkeeper John Chorley flat footed but fortunately for the home team the ball rolled wide of his left post.
Excellent play from Jonathan Kift helped Ton to create another good chance soon after when he battled for possession about 25 yards out from goal. He passed to the wing where the ball was knocked into the penalty area for Davies to head at goal. Just as it looked as though the ball was going to lob Chorley the keeper had enough elasticity to reach the ball and pluck it out of the air.
Kevin Richards allowed 15 minutes of the second half to pass before introducing his first substitution into the game. Alyn Jones replaced Davies as the Ton manager looked to add more pace up front.
It almost paid off as Jones dribbled the ball around several opponents to get himself into the Caerleon box. From a tight angle on the left the Ton forward took a strike at goal but the ball was stopped on the line by a defender and cleared.
Both Dane Williams and Kristian Orchard were also introduced into the game during the second half and both missed chances to score in the same passage of play during the 85th minute as Caerleon remained well organised in defence.
Ton’s final opportunity for a goal came in the 88th minute after the referee awarded a free kick in a central position 25 yards out from goal. Williams got the ball over the wall but Chorley easily collected it into his chest.
Elsewhere in the league Goytre United remain top and three points ahead of Ton following their 2-0 win over title rivals Dinas Powys. Former Bulldogs players Richard Ryan and Steven Conaty were on target for the Goyts.
Ton’s next opponents are Maesteg Park Athletic at Ynys Park on Saturday 2nd February at 2pm. Maesteg come into the match following a 0-0 home draw with Cwmbran Town.
