TON PENTRE 6 - 1 CROESYCEILIOG
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 8th March 2008
Ton Pentre strolled to victory over Croesyceiliog at Ynys Park as the Rhondda Bulldogs consolidated their position at the top of Welsh League Division One.
The home team found themselves 5-0 up by half time against a Croesyceiliog outfit that are threatened with the very real prospect of relegation.
Ton Pentre took an eighth minute lead through Alyn Jones whose good anticipation saw him positioned well when a defender slipped in the penalty area following a cross from the right. Jones struck cleanly with goalkepeer John Bailey left powerless to stop the ball from settling in the back of the goalmouth.
Less than five minutes later Ton grabbed their second goal when Andrew Pearson won his battle for possession allowing him to bring Ryan Shugar into play on his right. From the wing Shugar crossed into the box but the pace and height of the ball deceived both the Croesyceiliog defenders and goalkeeper to drop into the goal at the far post for 2-0.
On 27 minutes the Bulldogs scored again when Shugar’s header inside the box set Pearson up for a shot. The former Afan Lido front man did not spurn this opportunity as his strike from close range ended up in the back of the net.
Ton Pentre were in complete control of this fixture and Pearson netted his second of the match eight minutes later when from a quick free kick inside the Coresyceiliog half, Andrew Hughes was able to find the striker with a well timed pass. Pearson was left with just the keeper to beat, which he done so with impeccable ease.
Jonathan Kift scored the fifth goal on 37 minutes when the ball broke kindly for the former Cardiff City striker allowing him to score with confidence.
Ton Pentre were just as assertive in the second half but some excellent goalkeeping from Bailey stopped the score line from becoming very embarrassing for Croesyceiliog.
The visitors best chance of the match arose on the hour mark when one of their strikers found themselves one-on-one with Ton goalkeeper Marty Ellacott. Just as he looked certain to score Ellacott produced two gutsy sliding tackles to deny him but Croesyceliog were awarded a penalty when the player was bundled over by a Ton defender.
From the spot Danny Jenkins scored Croesyceiliog’s consolation goal to make the score line read 5-1.
Before the end of the match Ton Pentre did find the back of the net for one final goal when Alyn Jones scored his second of the match with a side footed strike after connecting to Nicky Jones’ cross from the left.
This win keeps the Rhondda Bulldogs top of the league table with 52 points from 22 matches. They are 7 points clear of Bryntirion Athletic in second place who beat fellow title chasers Goytre United 3-2. Many sources are now touting the Bulldogs as favourites for the title but Ton know that they must keep their feet on the ground as they face Goytre United, Dinas Powys and Bryntirion Athletic in forthcoming matches.
Ton Pentre are away to Maesteg Park Athletic on Tuesday 11th March (K.O. 7.30pm) and travel to Caldicot Town on Saturday 15th March for a 2.30pm kick off.
