TON PENTRE 4 - 0 CWMBRAN TOWN
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 5th January 2008
A dominating performance by Ton Pentre saw them convincingly beat Cwmbran Town at Ynys Park for a result which moved the Rhondda Bulldogs up into second place in Welsh League Division One.
It took the Bulldogs just 11 minutes to break the deadlock and they found themselves in complete control of fixture by taking a three goal lead into half time. The second half was much the same as the first but they could only find the back of the net once more due to Richard Jefferies commendable goalkeeping for Cwmbran Town.
Ton’s first goal came from a corner kick when Dale Price picked out Andrew Hughes’ run for the Bulldogs captain to head the ball into the goal like a bullet for a cracking goal.
Three minutes later Ton were awarded a penalty kick to double their lead after Jonathan Kift’s shot was handled in the box by Cwmbran Town defender Blaise ‘Lefty’ Simplice. It was an easy decision for the match Referee as the shot had been stopped from testing Jefferies in goal.
From the penalty spot Dale Price confidently scored as Cwmbran Town’s challenge quickly crumbled.
As the half hour mark approached Kift gained possession of the ball out on the right deep inside the Cwmbran half. He crossed the ball into Mattie Davies who was on the edge of the six yard box. Davies headed the ball into the inside of the left hand post for a wonderful goal and a 3-0 lead at half time.
Cwmbran were better in the second half and were able to create a few chances in front of goal. In the 68th minute Ton’s Ryan Morgan conceded a free kick about 25 yards out. From the kick Ton goalkeeper Marty Ellacott was well beaten as he watched the ball hit the crossbar as the Bulldogs were fortunate not to concede.
Ton Pentre responded to this with a fantastic cross into the box from the left by Ryan Shugar for Hughes whose header was saved well by Jefferies.
The Rhondda Bulldogs were piling on the pressure once again as Kift looked to get himself on the score sheet with a 20 yard strike that took a wicked deflection. Jefferies did well to reposition himself following the deflection to tip the ball over the bar.
Kevin Richards made several changes before Ton found the net again with Mattie Davies, Nicky Jones and Dale Price making way for Alyn Jones, Dane Williams and Scott Jones.
Scott Jones was particularly impressive for the ten minutes in which he was on the field and he set up Ton’s fourth goal.
He took the ball forward from the middle of the pitch in the 90th minute to the edge of the 18 yard box where the ball broke to Kift whose powerful finish saw him notch up his 11th goal of the season.
The 4-0 score line was a deserved result for the Bulldogs who put in a solid display in front of the Ynys Park faithful.
January could prove to be a decisive month for Ton Pentre in more ways than one. The Bulldogs must play Afan Lido away on Saturday 12th (2pm), Bridgend Town home on Saturday 19th (2pm) and Caerleon away on Saturday 26th (2pm), who are the only team to have beaten Ton so far this season in the league.
This month has also seen the transfer window open until 31st January and there are sure to be some coming’s and going’s at Ynys Park and at Ton’s rivals, which could have a significant impact on the title challengers.
