TON PENTRE 0 - 2 DINAS POWYS
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 22nd March 2008
Ton Pentre’s Welsh Football League Division One title challenge suffered a blow at Ynys Park when Dinas Powys scored two second half goals to drag themselves back into the championship race.
It was a below par performance by Ton Pentre whose lead at the top of Division One has been cut to four points. The Rhondda Bulldogs struggled to create goal scoring chances against a well organised Dinas Powys team.
Ton Pentre dominated the early exchanges between the two clubs forcing Dinas Powys to defend from deep positions but the home team lacked a cutting edge with the visitors’ defence comfortably dealing with everything that was thrown at them.
Andrew Hughes had Ton Pentre’s best chance in the first half but he sent his effort over Keiron Blackburn’s crossbar.
Dinas Powys came close with a 25 yard strike from Geza Hajgato but Ton goalkeeper and Assistant Manager Marty Elacott saved well to deny the player.
With six minutes of the second half played Dinas Powys took the lead following a corner kick by Jason Cowan. The ball into the box was cleared out of the penalty area and Cowan regained possession on the right. He sent what looked like a cross into the box but the ball curled inside of the left post to give Dinas the lead.
Looking for the leveller Alyn Jones and Dale Price linked up on the left and the latter’s cross into the box caused the Dinas defence all kinds of problems. However, Blackburn eventually got his hands on the ball to deny the equaliser.
Less than a minute later Dinas Powys scored a second goal in the 69th minute when Ton Pentre attempted to play an offside trap that failed miserably. This allowed Nana Baah a free run on goal while the Ton defenders frantically tried to catch him. Baah’s shot was blocked by Ellacott but the ball still rolled towards goal. A scramble between Drew Fahiya and a Ton defender resulted in the Dinas player toe poking the ball over the line for 2-0.
Despite their best efforts Ton were unable to find a way back into the match even though Lee Matthews and Dane Williams came close with their shots.
Dinas Powys held on to their two goal lead with relative ease as Ton succumbed to defeat for the third time in the league.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back against Bryntirion Athletic on Wednesday 26th March with the match kicking off at 7.30pm.
They then travel to Cwmbran Town on Saturday 29th March for a 2.30pm kick off.
