TON PENTRE 13 - 0 GARW
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 9th February 2008
Ton Pentre put in a professional performance at Ynys Park as they brushed aside Garw SBGC who lie at the foot of Welsh Football League Division One.
The gap in ability between these two teams was demonstrated in this completely one sided affair with the Rhondda Bulldogs going into the half time interval eight goals clear as they failed to show mercy to their woeful opponents.
This match was always going to be the case of Ton attempting to score as many goals as possible to help their goal difference in the search for the Division One title, as Garw have suffered regular hammering’s throughout the season by most of the teams in the top half of the table.
The away team held out for 9 minutes of the first half but once they succumbed to the pressure their confidence crumbled due to the weight of Ton Pentre’s quality.
Andrew Hughes, club Captain, opened the scoring when he headed in a ball that was delivered from the left by Jonathan Kift.
A minute later a long throw from former Afan Lido striker Andrew Pearson was met by the head of Alyn Jones and he directed the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
A third goal in 3 minutes sapped all belief from Garw as Scott Hayward prodded home his shot at the front post following a Dale Price free kick from the left.
The Bulldogs were made to wait until the 25th minute before scoring again when Pearson glanced in a header to score his first of the afternoon. Two minutes later it was 5-0 after Price pierced the defence undetected to latch onto a through ball. His squared pass to Kift allowed the striker to score.
On the half hour mark Garw lost possession from their own goal kick and Pearson was allowed a clear shot on target. Ton’s new signing scored by striking the ball through the keeper’s legs.
In the 33rd minute of play Pearson was allowed a free run on goal that he did not waste as he completed his hat-trick. The striker has now scored 4 goals in his first two appearances for the Rhondda Bulldogs.
Ton made it 8-0 ten minutes before half time when Hughes’ run through the middle of the park was found by a threaded pass from midfield. As the goalkeeper rushed from his line the Ton Captain lifted the ball over him and into an empty net.
At the start of the second half Dane Williams replaced hat-trick hero Pearson. Williams looked hungry for a goal and he grabbed one in the 62nd minute.
After Nicky Jones had been fouled on the edge of the 18-yard box, Price sent a well executed cross into the danger zone. Williams struck the ball on the outside of his boot to direct it into the net.
Williams scored his second on 76 minutes after Alyn Jones had cut a low cross into the box following a run up the left. This goal saw Ton Pentre reach double figures with the score now 10-0.
Mattie Davies was introduced into the game and he appeared to fancy his chances of getting himself on the score sheet and he did so in the 79th minute with one of the finest strikes of the afternoon.
When the ball broke for him Davies outran two defenders and kept them at bay with his upper body strength. From the edge of the box he struck a shot across the goal and the ball settled neatly in the bottom right hand corner of the net for a delightful effort.
The Rhondda Bulldogs scored twice more before full time with Nicky Jones doing well to win the ball before finding the back of the net on 87 minutes and Kift completed the goal scoring a minute from time with a wonderful free kick from just outside the box to make it 13-0.
Up next for Ton Pentre is a Rhondda Cynon Taf derby against Pontypridd Town at Ynys Park on Saturday 23rd February at 2pm. Just like Garw, Pontypridd are also doing their best to avoid relegation and their improved team will look to upset Ton’s title campaign.
Following the conclusion of the Pontypridd match Ton Pentre will host a Horse Racing Event in the Clubhouse for anyone who is interested in having some fun. The first race is due to take place at approximately 4.30pm. Everyone is welcome.
