TON PENTRE 2 - 1 NEWPORT COUNTY
Friendly Fixture
Wednesday 11th September 2007
Due to the Welsh European Championship international qualifying matches with Germany and Slovakia, both Ton Pentre and Newport County were keen to arrange a friendly with each other to keep their respective squads sharp.
Both teams fielded strong line-ups at Ynys Park and played a competitive high tempo match with neither side looking to give anything away.
Ton Pentre took a deserved lead against their Football Conference South opponents midway through the first half when following some well applied pressure from Ryan Shugar on the right wing Ton won a corner. Defender Mark Crutch was able to score from outside the box after Newport were unable to clear the ball.
Newport caught Ton off guard with a quickly taken free kick moments later and were made to pay for their sloppy defending as the visitors easily drew level.
Ton regained the lead soon after when Newport finally succumbed to some persistent pressure from a series of corner kicks. Dane Williams was making a nuisance of himself up front and was rewarded with a goal.
Both teams made several changes during the second half with Ton manager Kevin Richards keeping his mind on the Rhondda Bulldog’s Welsh Cup First Round match with Aberbargoed Buds.
The second half was just as entertaining as the first but neither team were able to find the back of the net and Ton were deserving of their win.
