PONTARDAWE TOWN 0 - 3 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 29th September 2007

New signing Mattie Davies scored on his debut to get Ton Pentre on their way to a well earned 3-0 win at Pontardawe Town.

The Rhondda Bulldogs all round performance was fantastic as they completely dominated proceedings at The Recreation Ground where Pontardawe rarely got out of their own half.

The score line probably could have been much bigger had Ton took their chances in the first half with Jonathan Kift missing several golden opportunities to give his team the lead.

In the sixth minute after winning a free kick, Kift saw his point blank header somehow caught by Mark Snell on the goal line after the ball had rebounded to him following Mattie Davies’ original shot.

Later in the half Kift was released by a through ball from midfield and the former Cardiff City striker looked odds on to score, however, his shot deflected off a defender and went wide of the post.

On the half hour mark the player was again wasteful in front of goal after being set free. With Mattie Davies taking up an excellent position in support Kift chose the wrong option and elected to shoot himself and his effort was saved by Snell.

As half time approached Ton came close to breaking the deadlock again when from a corner the ball reached Dale Price who was standing on the edge of the box, from here he smashed a speculative shot that forced Snell to desperately punch the ball over the cross bar.

Ton Pentre finally found the goal that they were searching for in the 52nd minute when former Carmarthen Town striker Mattie Davies showed evidence of his prolific goalscoring record to hit the back of the net in his debut for the Bulldogs. The build up play was exquisite with Nicky Jones on the left side leaving his opponents chasing shadows to supply the penalty area with the ball. Here Kift saw his shot saved by Snell but Davies was on hand to clean up by making no mistake with his finish.

Within five minutes of the first goal the Bulldogs found themselves 2-0 up when good battling from Jones on the left saw him cut inside to take the ball into the box. The former Welsh schoolboy international was kicked by Jamie Rickard after skilfully passing him and the referee was quick to award a penalty. Dale Price scored from the spot for the Rhondda Bulldogs with a well taken penalty kick.

Ton Pentre had plenty more opportunities to score during the half but were made to wait until injury time before seeing the ball in back of the net again. Once again Jones’ good work on the left saw him deliver a pass to Ashley Evans whose intelligently played through ball to Kift allowed him another attempt on goal. He made up for his first half misses with a well taken goal to cap off another fantastic passage of play.

The Rhondda Bulldogs remain undefeated in the league after seven matches and currently occupy second place in the table two points behind Goytre United.

Ton’s attentions now turn to the Welsh Cup as they travel to Radyr to play Cardiff Corinthians in the second round of the competition on Saturday 6th October at 2.30pm.
