TON PENTRE 3 - 1 PONTARDAWE TOWN
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 20th October 2007
Ton Pentre moved to the top of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One following their 3-1 win over Pontardawe Town at Ynys Park.
A spectacular first half display secured all three points in this match with the Rhondda Bulldogs three goals clear before the half time interval.
Alyn Jones gave Ton Pentre the lead inside the first ten minutes of the match after Dale Price had crossed from the left into Mattie Davies inside the box. He headed towards goal but the ball hit a defender, however, Jones was alert and he made sure that the ball ended up in the back of the goal.
Ton were domineering and they increased their lead on 25 minutes as Davies worked his way clear after beating the Pontardawe offside trap. Despite almost being brought down by goalkeeper Mark Snell, Davies kept his feet to side foot the ball into an empty net.

Ashley Evans was instrumental in the build up to the third goal two minutes before half time, when he sent a wonderful cross into the box for Davies whose sublime finish left Snell helpless on his goal line.
Pontardawe were presented with a chance to score when one of their players was bundled over inside the Ton box. There was no protest from the Ton players and the referee quite rightly awarded a penalty kick. Former Ton player Jamie Rickard struck the penalty to the left but Marty Ellacott pulled off an excellent save before Davies cleared the ball up field and out of danger.
The visitors did hit the back of the net in the eighth minute of the second half, when from a free kick out wide on the left the ball fell to player in the box who was allowed the time and space to volley the ball past Ellacott.
Ton Pentre’s second half performance was not as convincing as their first; however, Pontardawe never really looked like getting themselves back into this match.
The Rhondda Bulldogs remain undefeated in nine league matches and currently sit top of Division One a point ahead of both Bryntirion Athletic and Goytre United. Meanwhile Rhondda rivals Cambrian and Clydach Vale are two points behind the Bulldogs in fourth after their fine 1-0 win over Goytre United.
In their next league match Ton Pentre travel to Pontypridd Town for a Rhondda Cynon Taff derby clash on Saturday 27th October, kick off is at 2.30pm.
On Saturday 3rd November Ton are back in Welsh Cup action with a trip to Haverfordwest County in the third round where they will be looking to cause an upset. The match against the Welsh Premier League team kick’s off at 2pm and will be the feature match on S4/C’s Y Clwb Pel-Droed programme.
