PONTYPRIDD TOWN 2 - 8 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 27th October 2007
Ton Pentre remained top of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One after trouncing Pontypridd Town at their Ynysangharad Park ground.
The Rhondda Bulldogs raced into a three goal lead in the first 11 minutes of the match. A free kick on the right hand side of the pitch provided the first goal when Nicky Jones whipped the ball into the Pontypridd penalty box where it appeared as though Mark Crutch had nipped the ball past the goalkeeper with his head.
The second goal was from the penalty spot after Dane Williams, returning to action following a broken foot, was chopped down in the box by goalie Leighton James. Andrew Hughes scored from the spot against his former club.
Jonathan Kift got himself on the way to a hat trick when he ran free following a through ball that split the defence to make it 3-0.
During the 22nd minute Pontypridd scrambled a goal back when their free kick hit the Ton wall and awkwardly deflected high and deep into the box. Under pressure Marty Ellacott punched the ball away but in all the confusion a player on the edge of the box drilled the ball into the goal.
Nicky Jones and Paul Michael linked well in a one-two movement that allowed Jones a chance to score which the player did so with superb composure for a clinical finish in the 37th minute.
Three minutes later a short corner kick from Jones to Kift and back, dragged the defence out that allowed the winger to cross into the box for Williams to score with a floated header making it 5-1.
Pontypridd scored a second after some lovely football when a ball through the centre led to a defensive glitch that allowed the home side’s attacker a free strike on goal in first half injury time.
For the first 25 minutes of the second half Ton Pentre were dire and it allowed Pontypridd a larger slice of possession and they caused the Rhondda Bulldogs several problems until a Lee Matthews cross into the box saw a defender kick the ball into his own net.
Matthews was substituted in the 78th minute as Scott Jones was brought onto the field of play by Ton manager Kevin Richards, and two minutes later the player set up the seventh goal of the afternoon. His good work in midfield saw him provide an excellent pass into Richard Carter’s run on the left wing that allowed him to cut the ball into the box where Kift finished the move off.
Kift scored his third of the match after receiving a pass from Kristian Orchard to complete Ton Pentre’s 8-2 rout two minutes before full time.
Ton Pentre’s attentions now turn towards a third round Welsh Cup clash away to Haverfordwest County of the Welsh Premier League. Ton’s opponents currently lie 8th in their league following a 3-2 home defeat to Newtown. S4/C’s television cameras will be at Bridge Meadow as the fixture will be the feature match on Y Clwb Pel Droed on the evening of Saturday 3rd November. The match kicks off at 2pm.
