November 2nd: Pontardawe 1 v Ton Pentre 2
(Match abandoned due to waterlogged pitch)

After Friday and Saturday's rain it seemed remarkable that this Welsh League encounter between Pontardawe and Ton Pentre got the go ahead. Before the start of play the ground appeared to be firm, however, as the game proceeded it would have been of more help if the players had been kitted out with Wellington boots rather than football boots.

Before the games premature end the Rhondda Bulldogs took the lead in the 15th minute. Some excellent play up the left wing saw Jamie Michaels send a cross into the box for Carl Thomas to head Ton into a 1-0 lead.

Carl Thomas scored Ton Pentre's second goal in the 31st minute after Dean Morris had unleashed a superb pass to the player out wide on the right. From this position Thomas ran inside and curled his shot past the progressing Pontardawe goalkeeper, 2-0.

The two teams took a little longer than the normal 15-minute interval for half-time. With the rain still constantly falling from the sky it must be assumed that the referee and his assistants were debating as to whether the match should carry on.

Eventually the two title challenging teams appeared from their dressing rooms and started the second half and Pontardawe grabbed a goal back ten minutes in.

On the 59th minute mark the referee and his assistants met in the middle of the pitch to discuss the conditions. This looked as though it was going to be the final whistle, however, the referee signalled to the players to continue.

In the 66th minute the referee blew his whistle and it signalled the abandonment of the match. With the home team 2-1 down they were more than happy to run off the pitch and not continue the game, although, understandably, Ton Pentre were not too keen to finish.

With the pitch turned into a muddy lagoon it was understandable why the referee decided to call a halt to the match, however, conditions had not changed from what they were at half-time and with only 24 minutes remaining then the fixture could have been played to its finish. It now means that Ton Pentre will have to return to Pontardawe in the future to replay the fixture.

The next two matches for Ton Pentre give them a break from the league as the Rhondda Bulldogs play Porth Tywyn away twice in cup competitions. The first is the second round of the League Cup on November 9 (kick-off 1.45pm) and the second in the third round of the Welsh Cup on November 16 with the kick-off time to be confirmed.

Ton Pentre: Howe; Tapper; Davies; Roberts; Prygodzicz; Hughes; Morris; Craig Thomas; Carl Thomas; Michaels; Harding.
