February 15th: Cardiff Corinthians 2 v Ton Pentre 1

After Ton Pentre's fine win the week previously in the Welsh Cup, the Rhondda Bulldogs were forced to make several changes to their team. With Ian Davies, Jason Roberts and Mike Jones absent, and all of which defenders, Neil Davies was forced to fall back into defence from midfield to play along with Nathan Prygodzicz and Mark Evans. Meanwhile Kevin Richards had to play himself due to a niggling injury to Alex Lawless, with Jarrod Harvey also being called upon to play in midfield.

These changes seemed to affect their performance from the kick off with Ton failing to play smoothly. Cardiff Corries looked to capitalise with an attack that saw John McNamara and Gareth Wallwork surge through the Ton midfield. However, Andrew Hughes stopped the movement with a hard committed challenge that allowed the Rhondda Bulldogs to counter attack but fail to to get the better of Quinn McCarthy in the Corries goals.

Ton Pentre's best move of the first half saw Prygodzicz win a well-contested header in defence in the 21st minute. The ball reached Evans who ran up the left wing and passed inside to Carl Thomas in the Corries goal area. McCarthy had to pull off a fine save to tip Thomas's shot around the post.

Six minutes later Hughes was instrumental in a move that allowed Ceri Harding a run in on goal. He managed to get the better of the Corries defence when a challenge from James Russell failed to take the ball away from the players' feet. Once again McCarthy was ready and waiting in his goals as he denied Harding's effort to score.

It only took Cardiff Corries four minutes of the second half to score after an attack won them a corner. From the kick McNamara jumped above the Ton defence to head Corries into the lead. Huw Neale came close to doubling Corries lead moments later had he connected fully with the ball.

Ton failed to make any impact in the second half and nearly gifted Corries a goal after a mistake in defence by Evans, but the Corries player failed to take full advantage of the opportunity as Ton were lucky to escape yet again.

Cardiff Corries finally scored the second they had been threatening in the 89th minute with McNamara scoring a brace from what looked to be a near impossible angle. With two defenders and a keeper on the goal line the player still managed to squeeze the ball in from an acute angle.

Tom Billings grabbed the Ton consolation goal after he headed in after freekick from just outside the box on the right.

This is a Ton Pentre performance that is best forgotten with all three points going to a team fourth from bottom of Division One battling against relegation.

The draw for the Welsh Cup Quarter Finals has taken place with Ton Pentre being handed a home tie against Welsh Premier team, Oswestry Town. This match will be played on March 8 with a kick off time to be confirmed.

Ton face an away trip to Pontardawe on Saturday 22 February with a 2.15pm kick off.

Subs not used: Alex Lawless & Richard Johnson.
