This was a good win for Ton Pentre with a second half performance that was worthy of the score line with Andrew Hughes and Carl Thomas getting the goals. However, the first half was certainly no spectacle.
Goytre made the biggest impression on a poor first half and were the first team to create a goal scoring opportunity when an awkward ball was sent over the top of the Ton Pentre defence. Chris Piper brought the ball down and controlled well. After running out wide he eventually managed to get a cross back into the box which fell onto Carl Evans's head but his effort went over the cross bar.
Johnny Walkley and Evans linked well going forward for Goytre and were able to provide Piper with a chance to shoot. To Ton's relief the player striked into the side netting.
The Rhondda Bulldogs best chance of the half came when a flowing movement from left to right of the midfield ended with Neil Davies being set through on goal, but the players shot was blocked by a Goytre defender.
Ton looked a different team after the midway point and when Thomas pulled out wide to cross into the box, Lee Tapper was given the chance to strike at goal but saw his effort roll along the goalmouth and out for a goal kick.
A minute later brilliant skill from Alyn Jones saw him loose two markers to square the ball across the box where Hughes was on hand to fire Ton into a 52nd minute lead.
Jones was involved in Ton getting their second goal. He did well to hold the ball up giving Hughes enough time to join him in attack. Hughes took the ball on with Goytre's John Williams playing him onside. A short pass to Thomas left the keeper with no chance as the striker made it 2-0 in the 70th minute.
A rare second half chance fell to Goytre 10 minutes from time when Piper was able to get a cross into the box. Evans met it and should have done better with his headed attempt that went wide of Jon Howe in the Ton goals.
With three minutes left to play Thomas got his 25th goal of the season as he ran through on goal all alone. With a one-on-one with the keeper Thomas showed enough composure to make the score 3-0 as Goytre had a possible case for offside.
This win for Ton and Bettws' 7-0 thrashing of Milford now sets up a titanic clash when the two clubs meet on Wednesday 16 April at Bettws Park with the kick-off at 6.00pm.
The Rhondda Bulldogs next home match will be on Thursday 24 April when Garw are the visitors to Ynys Park for a 7.30pm kick-off.
