03/04/04: Gwynfi United 3 - 3 Ton Pentre

GWYNFI UNITED put in a battling performance against Ton Pentre and will feel unfortunate that they did not win all three points. The home team took the lead three times against the Rhondda Bulldogs in difficult conditions at the Welfare Ground.

Gwynfi looked the more threatening in the first half with Ton Pentre having to play against driving wind and rain. They had a fantastic chance for the lead in the opening proceedings when Vince Lewis squared the ball to Jamie Rickard, only to see him hit wide of Marty Ellacott's goal post.

As the half-hour mark passed a Gwynfi attack resulted in a goal when Jamie Rowberry managed to slip through both the midfield and defence. The player kept his cool and put Gwynfi a goal up against Ton.

Ellacott foiled Gwynfi's attempts of taking a two goal lead in the 33rd minute when he saved a good effort from Lewis that was the outcome of a lovely piece of connecting play.

Ton were dealt a blow just before half-time when Kevin Richards was forced to replace Dean Morris after picking up an injury. Lee Tapper was brought on in his place.

The Rhondda Bulldogs had two good chances to score early on in the second half through Carl Thomas and Raith Plant but had to wait until the 68th minute for their equalising goal.

Ellacott sent a free kick from just inside the Ton half into the Gwynfi box. Jason Roberts headed on from the edge of the 12-yard area to Mike Jones who poked the ball past Richard Evans who was off his line. Thomas then slid the ball over the line under the challenge of two Gwynfi defenders attempting to clear it.

Ton’s Lee Tapper heading out of defence Gwynfi replied by taking the lead five minutes later when Lewis's powerful strike left Ellacott helpless after receiving a perfect pass from Rickard across the goal area. Ton drew level again through Shaun Fackerel when he scored from about 30 yards in the 77th minute. Having bent the ball around the 'keeper, Gwynfi had once more conceded their lead to the Bulldogs. With no more than two minutes having past Gwynfi took the lead for the third time and looked good to hold out for the win, however, Thomas took the ball past Evans in the 83rd minute and Plant toe poked in yet another equaliser. The match finished at 3-3 after a very open final 20 minutes that could have quite randomly seen the result go either way. Ton Pentre visit Cardiff Corries on Wednesday April 7 with the kick off at 6pm. The following match for the Bulldogs will take them to Grange Quins ten days later on April 17 with the kick off at Leckwith Stadium at 3pm.
