02/10/04: FAW Cup Round 2: Ton Pentre 2 - 0 Cardiff Corries

THIS WAS NOT a cup classic, nor was there any shock result at Ynys Park. What the spectators saw was a solid Ton Pentre performance that limited Cardiff Corries to a few second half chances in a one sided Welsh Cup second round tie between a Division One and Division Two side.

The first half was uneventful although Ton Pentre’s captain Andrew Hughes did make some useful forward runs as he attempted to open up the play.

A rare piece of goalmouth action took place in the 30th minute when Justin Pengilley fouled Geraint Pitt for a freekick to be awarded. Bulldogs defender Ian Davies was on the end of the ball into the box and his headed shot came close as Cardiff Corries struggled from the set piece.

As half time approached Pitt made an excellent run into the Corries area. As he crossed to Carl Thomas the ball deflected off a defender and onto the cross bar. Corries managed to clean the situation up by clearing the ball for a corner.

Andrew Seburn missed a superb chance to put Ton into the lead before the interval when from the corner he sent his unchallenged header wide of the post.

Moments after the restart a simple ball over the top of the Corries defence found Lyndon Williams. As Dean Pymble advanced from his line Williams attempted to strike the ball over him but the goalkeeper did well to palm it out for a corner.

Geraint Pitt crossed the ball into the box and found Nathan Prygodzicz at the far post who thumped a header into the net for 1-0 to notch up his third goal of the season and his second in this Welsh Cup campaign.

On several occasions Pymble kept his team in the game as he denied both Carl Thomas and Scott Hayward the chance to increase the score.

From Hayward’s chance Ton won a corner that Ian Davies connected to but was unlucky to see his header smash against the cross bar.

Pymble was called into action again when in the 63rd minute Mike Colcombe conceded a freekick outside his area. Thomas curled a goal bound freekick but saw Pymble flick the ball away for a corner.

Following this Lee Brown and Dale Price replaced Thomas and Andrew Seburn.

Brown was involved straight away when Williams lined his strike partner up for a shot. Brown struck the ball low and hard but the chance was foiled by Pymble who dived well to his left.

Corries best chance of a goal was as a result of a freekick from around 30 yards out. Jason Gordon hit a powerful shot tha went straight to Jon Howe standing in the centre of his goal posts.

Ton finally put the game beyond doubt in the 90th minute from another corner. It was Pitt who once again supplied the ball with Ian Davies getting it past Pymble with a confident diving header.

The second round of the Welsh Cup provided little in the way of shocks with Glantraeth the only “giant killers” knocking out Welsh Premier outfit Newi Cefn Druids. Therefore, the majority of the top echelon remain in the competition that will make it an interesting third round draw. The draw is expected to take place on a future edition of Y Clwb Pêl Droed on S4C.
