FOR the second week running a penalty shoot out ended Ton Pentre’s involvement in a cup competition. This time the Rhondda Bulldogs were knocked out of the Shamrock Travel Welsh League Cup in the second round.

Alyn Jones could have given Ton Pentre the lead after a minute of play when he broke free goal side of a defender. However, under the challenge of the defender Jones sent his shot wide.

On the half hour mark Ton were lucky to survive a shot from a Goytre player who was left unmarked at the far post. The ball hit Neil Davies on the goal line to deny the home side the lead.

When Jones was in possession of the football a few minutes later he was unable to balance himself for a shot on target but did manage to get a pass to Andrew Hughes. The Ton captain lined the ball up for Lyndon Williams to strike but he saw his effort go over the bar.

Dale Price and Hughes linked well just before the break with the latter forcing Gareth Scantlebury to tip the ball over the bar to keep the score line at 0-0.

The Bulldogs had a disastrous start to the second half as they went a goal down through a fortunately misleading cross into the box. Ian Turner sent a cross into the Ton box and Jon Howe looked convinced it was going over the bar. The ball though lobbed Howe and dropped into the net at the far post.

During the second half Kristian Orchard replaced Scott Hayward on the left wing.

Ton forced an equalizer 9 minutes from the end of normal time when Goytre conceded a free kick outside their box. Orchard sent the kick into the box and as the ball was cleared to the edge of the area Williams shaped himself to volley the ball into the back of net.

Both teams failed to make an impact during extra time as very few chances were created in front of goal and a penalty shoot out was inevitable.

The penalty shoot out went into sudden death and Ton suffered defeat for the second week running when the Bulldogs missed their seventh penalty.
