Ton Pentre faced two very difficult matches over the space of a few days when they first entertained a Neath Athletic side that look destined to be champions. Then the Rhondda Bulldogs were on the road for the final time this season to face Welsh Cup finalists, Afan Lido.
The midweek match against Neath Athletic was a physical contest that was deservedly won by Ton’s visitors who looked solid all over the pitch. The Bulldogs appeared to lack penetration up front and each time the ball went forward Neath were able to quickly put Ton back under pressure.
Ton goalkeeper and club captain, Marty Ellacott, again showed all at Ynys Park his worth on several occasions when his saves stopped Neath from taking the lead during the first half.
Neath Athletic probably thought that it wasn’t going to be their day after several goal mouth scrambles in the Ton box saw them fail to score.
However, this all changed with the introduction of Carl Shaw for the visitors on the hour mark.
Shaw got himself involved immediately and following some poor Ton play a free kick was conceded. Jarrod Price crossed into the box and found Lee Bevan who headed back to Shaw for him to score.
Neath scored a second goal five minutes from time when a Ton attack broke down. Chris Pridham got himself on the score sheet after a swift passage of play from Neath.
This result was a major step in Neath’s march towards winning the league.
