Ton Pentre ended their season with a confident performance to beat Maesteg Park Athletic 2-0 at Ynys Park in the Welsh Football League Division One match.
The result should see Ton Pentre finish fourth in the league, and although all at the club will be disappointed that the Rhondda Bulldogs didn’t push Neath Athletic a little closer for the title, everyone will surely agree that the 2006-07 campaign was better than last seasons when the Ynys Park club flirted with relegation from Division One.
The Rhondda Bulldogs got off to a good start in this match and following a sublime passage of football in the 9th minute, Jamie Michaels prodded the ball into the back of the net. The move had started with Phil Clarke whose pass into space allowed Dale Price to send a perfect cross into the Maesteg Park box from which the goal was scored.
The Rhondda Bulldogs doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Clarke was again involved in the build up play as he threaded the ball through to Alyn Jones who had made an excellent run forward. Jones crossed to the far post and Jamie Bradford was in place to head in another well worked goal.
Throughout the rest of this match it only ever really looked like the Bulldogs who would score but despite coming close on several occasions to increase their lead, Ton failed to find the back of the net.
During the second half Dwayne Mardenborough made his last Ton Pentre appearance when he came off the bench to replace Andy Mainwaring. The former Birmingham City trainee is moving back to the Midlands over the summer and both him and his cartwheels will be missed by all as Dwayne had become a cult hero at Ynys Park.
Ton Pentre will now enjoy the close season and begin their preparations for the 2007-2008 campaign with a new committee in place and new signings a certainty.
