Ton Pentre 3 - 1 Afan Lido
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Wednesday 27th August 2008
Alyn Jones scored a second half wonder goal to regain the lead for Ton Pentre against Afan Lido and set up a superb victory for the Rhondda Bulldogs at Ynys Park.
His 80th minute goal was an absolute joy to behold as he received the ball in the Afan Lido box near the penalty spot, demonstrating splendid control he took it out of the air with one foot and chipped it with his other. Lido goalkeeper Leon Cosker was left helpless in his six yard box as the ball dropped into the net behind him.
Despite a ten day break since their last match, the Rhondda Bulldogs looked sharp and were quick to start creating chances against their Welsh League Division One rivals.
Ryan Shugar created one of the first opportunities when his 20 yard strike that forced Cosker to tip the ball around the left hand post.
Ton Pentre’s hard work finally paid off when Phil Clarke started a move that led to the first goal with his pass to Alyn Jones. Ton striker Christopher Jones had moved out wide from his central position which allowed Alyn Jones to play a clear pass to him. From this wide position Chris Jones angled his run into the box and despite the presence of several Lido defenders he managed to prod the ball into the goal with the help of a deflection.
Before half time a 20 yard shot from Lido’s Karl Lewis tested Ton keeper Keiron Blackburn who was forced into making a good save at the top right hand corner of the goal and pushing the ball out of play.
Afan Lido came even closer moments later when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Ton box following a foul on Lewis. Sam Wade’s excellent effort struck the left hand post with the Ton keeper completely beaten and fortunately for the Bulldogs the ball was removed from danger and the lead was taken into the interval.
Ton’s visitors were much better in the second period and they put the Rhondda Bulldogs under some considerable pressure.
Eventually Ton Pentre cracked as Lido got their reward for their period of dominance when Scott McCourbrey rounded off a move by scoring the equaliser.
Ton showed good character and resisted a Lido fight back as they raised their game. As a result of this Alyn Jones regained the lead for Ton in the 80th minute before the Bulldogs secured the points in injury time when Ryan Buchmann got on the end of Richard Jago’s ball into the six yard box to powerfully strike home and make it 3-1.
