Ton Pentre 5 - 3 Cwmbran Town

Despite going a goal down to Cwmbran Town in the first half, the Rhondda Bulldogs of Ton Pentre soon pulled themselves level and raced away to a 4-1 lead by half time. In the second half Cwmbran rallied to give themselves a chance in the match but Ton Pentre managed to steady the ship and hold out.
Ton Pentre completely dominated the opening 15 minutes of play creating chance after chance, however, Cwmbran took the lead with their first attack which yielded a corner kick. The ball landed at the feet of Joey Carless who, from outside the box, fired it in past Keiron Blackburn.
The Crows lead didn’t last long as Ton won themselves a corner. Ryan Morgan, who headed in a deserved equaliser from his position near the penalty spot, met the kick.
On the half hour a long throw from Lloyd Toghill into the Cwmbran box set Alyn Jones up for his first goal of the afternoon. An initial shot was saved by Ross Wilkinson but Jones made sure with his follow-up to give Ton the lead.
A few moments later Steve Edwards, making his first start of the season, demonstrated wonderful control as his skill took him around a defender to create a shooting opportunity for himself. He struck low and hard into the goal to round off a fantastic individual display of dexterity.
The Bulldogs scored a fourth before half time when Alyn Jones dribbled the ball into the box from the left. He cut back to the six yard line to shoot across the goal and grab himself a brace.
Six minutes into the second half Chris Jones wriggled his way into the box to send a pass across the goalmouth and into Toghill’s path who fired in to give Ton a 5-1 lead.
Defender Mark Crutch was substituted soon after as the Bulldogs looked to give striker Ryan Buchmann a run out. However, this appeared to destabilise the Ton defence allowing Cwmbran to infiltrate.
Carless bagged his second of the match on 63 minutes for Cwmbran and sewing a seed of doubt in the mind of the Ton players.
Ton’s blunder filled second half continued as slack defending allowed Robert Fowler to score Cwmbran’s third of the match with 20 minutes of the match still to play.
Cwmbran could have scored a further two goals as Marlon Kabi got clean through on goal but was denied by an assured save from Blackburn. The Crows went even closer on 90 minutes when fortunately for Ton Pentre they hit the crossbar.
Next up for the Bulldogs is an away trip to Llanwern in the first round of the FAW Welsh Cup, kick off for this game is 2.30pm on Saturday 13th September 2008. There’s no match on Saturday 6th September due to the Wales v Azerbaijan World Cup Qualifier at the Millennium Stadium.
