Newport YMCA 1 - 6 Ton Pentre
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 22nd November 2008
Ton Pentre gained themselves a convincing win when they visited bottom of the table Newport YMCA. Three goals in each half helped the Rhondda Bulldogs to victory and get their Division One title challenge back on track.
Andrew Hughes gave Ton the lead after 21 minutes of fairly even exchanges between the two teams.
Hughes rounded off a superb move that started with Lloyd Toghill’s throw deep inside the Newport half. His throw into the box was met by a defender, however, Chris Jones’ presence forced the Newport player to head deeper into his own goal area. Andrew Pearson helped the ball on to Ryan Shugar who headed down for Hughes to fire in past Gareth Wesson.
Two minutes before half time Newport YMCA nearly pulled themselves level when a ball was sent into the box from the left. The striker connected with the ball and struck it against the woodwork.
Ton replied to this fright by scoring their second of the afternoon when Jones broke free up the right flank. As he cut inside the box he squared a pass to Andrew Pearson who got to the ball before Wesson to smash home.
Newport’s heads were down and the Bulldogs pounced for a third time before the break when from a Shane Brewer corner defender Mark Crutch struck at the back post.
It almost got a lot worse for the home team when in first half injury time Jones ran through the middle of the Newport defence to go one-on-one with Wesson, fortunately for Newport the goalkeeper pulled off a super save to deny the Ton attacker.
The Bulldogs struck their fourth in the second half just shy of the hour mark when Chris Jones failed to give up on a lost cause. He gained control of the ball and supplied another squared pass to strike partner Pearson who grabbed his second of the match.
Moments later a simple ball over the top of defence allowed Jones to get goal side and have an unobstructed run at goal. Once again Wesson produced a fine save to deny the young striker a goal.
Ton Pentre lost their shape for a ten minute period midway through the second half following several substitutions and this allowed Newport a small slice of the action.
Despite pulling off some magnificent saves Kieron Blackburn was finally beaten when sloppy defending at a corner kick saw Newport grab a consolation goal.
With two minutes left in the match, the Bulldogs hit the back of the net on two more occasions.
Gareth Wharton connected well the ball from a corner kick to powerfully head in Ton’s fifth and Jones finally got his reward for an excellent performance when he latched onto Wharton’s long ball from defence to lob Wesson from approximately 15-yards out.
The win sees Ton remain in touch with the leading pack after Barry Town, Goytre United and Betws all lost their matches.
Ton’s next game is at Ynys Park on Friday 28th November at 7.15pm when top of the table Betws are visitors. Following the game there will be a Horse Racing fundraising event in the Clubhouse starting at approximately 9.30pm.
