Ton Pentre and Bettws played out a drab stalemate at the North Site ground as neither team could breach their opponents defence.
The Rhondda Bulldogs will feel particularly disappointed with their performance as they failed to muster a single shot on target during the whole 90 minutes. Bettws faired slightly better but were unable to score from two very good chances in the first half.
With just over half an hour played a long through ball from the Bettws midfield looked to release their strike force, however, the ball was slightly over hit and it appeared to be running loose just to the right of the 18-yard box.
Ton’s goalkeeper, Richard Jeffries, ran to meet the ball and bring it under his possession but he soon found himself over committed and was beaten to the ball by an alert opponent, and as a result a cross was sent into the box. Ryan Morgan was forced to clear off the line as he beat the striker to the ball.
Following some Bettws pressure Ton had to clear the ball off the goal line for a second time moments before the half-time break. On this occasion Adam Lewis was Ton’s saviour as the defender struck the ball to safety.
In the second half there was very little activity in either team’s penalty areas that would even suggest that the stalemate could be broken.
Despite the lack of action in this game Bettws will be content that they are beginning to steady the ship after the recent resignation of manager Mark Sage following a couple of poor results at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, one positive that the Bulldogs can take from this game is that they managed to keep a clean sheet after conceding 10 goals in their first four matches.
Ton have a tough test in their next match when Barry Town visit Ynys Park for a 2.30pm kick off on Saturday, 5th September. Under the guidance of manager Gavin Chesterfield, Barry are a well organised outfit and have already revealed what their intentions are this season by applying for promotion to the Welsh Premier League should they finish in a top two position in Welsh League Division One.
