Ynys Park witnessed another enthralling match as Dinas Powys visited the Rhondda looking for a positive result against an in form Ton Pentre team, and with the help of two lapses in defence and a speculative 25-yard effort the Vale of Glamorgan visitors did just that.
Following the final whistle the Rhondda Bulldogs were clearly dejected and frustrated with themselves for not getting the win.
It all began handsomely well for Ton Pentre who took a ninth minute lead through Leon Young following a goal mouth scramble. Dinas Powys were put under pressure when a through ball to Alyn Jones split the defence. As he squared the ball back across the goal mouth a melee ensued. One Ton shot had been desperately blocked on the line by what looked like a defenders arm but the Referee turned down the penalty appeals judging that the ball had hit his chest. Nevertheless, Young was able to eventually head the ball into the net as the Dinas defence failed to clear.
Somewhat against the run of play Dinas Powys worked an opening to score an equaliser in the 15th minute. A loss of concentration in the defence resulted in Calvin Mclaggon running clean through into the Ton box. He applied a sleek finish leaving Ton goalkeeper Richard Jeffries fuming at his defence.
Ton suffered a huge blow in the 26th minute when a sliding tackle by Mclaggon on Jordan Branch injured the Ton wingback. After five minutes of treatment Branch was unable to continue and was replaced by Dominic Broad.
Moments later Dinas pulled themselves in front following some disjointed Bulldogs defending. With just their second attack of the half Dinas outnumbered the defence and a simple squared pass allowed Ashton Turner to slot the ball home for 2-1.
Peter Blaine, the Dinas goalkeeper was having a splendid game and his efforts were saving the visitors time and time again. When Wayne Savage played a wonderful through ball for Alyn Jones to run onto Blaine denied the striker with an excellent block.
Ton drew level on 50 minutes when Young’s run into the box along the by-line drew a reckless tackle from a defender with the Referee quick to award a penalty kick; Andrew Hughes made no mistake in scoring from the spot by sending the keeper the wrong way.
Three minutes later Dinas nearly regained the lead from a free kick on the edge of the box, Jeffries saw it late as it popped up over the wall but he was still able to get a fist on the ball to punch it away from the Dinas players on the follow-up.
The visitors began to tire and were made to suffer a barrage of Ton attacks. For the most part they always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
However, they were unable to stop Ton in the 66th minute when from another attack Broad managed to get the ball over the line, which led to controversy as the Referee’s Assistant had flagged for an offside. Once spotted the Referee spoke with his Assistant to confirm that the ball Broad had scored from had been played through by a defender, therefore meaning the Ton midfielder was onside.
Savage should have ended the Dinas challenge in the 75th minute when from his shimmying run he found himself one-on-one with the keeper. He went direct with his shot and Blaine was able to save it.
From this the play moved into the Ton half and from 25-yards out Jacob Rudman hit a speculative ball forward that freakishly beat Jeffries standing just off his line when the ball dropped into the net behind him. This stunning goal drew the teams level once again.
Dinas Powys looked happy to hold out for a point and they did just that despite Ton’s best efforts to find a winner.
