Cardiff Corinthians produced an excellent defensive display as the Radyr based club continue to be one of Ton Pentre’s bogey teams. The Rhondda Bulldogs failed to bond in a match that saw them miss two penalty kicks that typified their abysmal performance.
The Corries were bottom of the table before this Welsh League Division One meeting but their deep defence drew the Bulldogs out and as a result they were able to counter attack and it was this that helped them to victory.
The home team took the lead after just five minutes of play when the Ton defence failed to pick-up the Corries attackers. This led to Gareth Delve taking the ball around goalkeeper Leighton James before slotting his shot into an empty net.
Ten minutes later Ton were looking dangerous on an attack that saw Leon Young going up the right. As he crossed the ball into the box its destination was blocked by Michael Bishop who was judged to have handled it by the Referee. Andrew Hughes took responsibility for the penalty but his kick was too soft and Chris Goulton was able to make an easy save.
With 32 minutes of the match completed Ton hit the ball out of play due to an injury to a Corries player. In returning the ball to the Bulldogs they hit it out for a throw-in deep inside the Ton half. The ball was thrown to James who was not sportingly given the time to play the ball. As a result the keeper was caught in possession when Rhys Yates tackled him before scoring Corries second of the match.
It almost got worse for the Bulldogs moments later when Corries latched onto Wayne Savage’s loose pass in midfield. As Richie Veale was bearing down on goal he looked likely to net but a fantastic tackle from Gavin Rodgers stopped the player from shooting.
Corries were able to make it 3-0 on 49 minutes after Rodgers lost the ball at the halfway line. The Ton defender attempted to foul his opponent but the player was able to get away from Rodgers as the Referee played an excellent advantage. Veale made easy work of the finish when he had just the Ton keeper to beat.
The Bulldogs were desperately looking for a way back into this match but all of their efforts were foiled by the Corries. One such occasion saw Goulton pull off a great save to deny a Chris Jones shot that looked destined to be a goal.
Ton were awarded their second penalty of the match in the 82nd minute when a Bulldogs player was tripped in the box. Captain Ryan Morgan stepped up this time to take the kick as he looked to apply pressure on Corries for the remainder of the match. Morgan hit the penalty straight down the middle and again Goulton was able to make an easy save.
The second penalty miss summed up Ton’s afternoon. It was their worst performance of the season so far. They will hope for better on Saturday 3rd October when they travel to the Brewery Field to play Bridgend Town in the second round of the FAW Welsh Cup. The match kicks off at 2.30pm.
