Ton Pentre have hit a dire patch of form as they were hammered for the second time in the space of a few days at their Ynys Park home. On this occasion Goytre United inflicted the misery as they scored five goals without reply against the Rhondda Bulldogs, with this defeat on the back of Ton’s 6-1 exit in the League Cup to West End.
Having suffered that heavy League Cup defeat, Ton Manager Andrew Hughes was hoping to get a positive reaction from his team in the match against Goytre, and there were early signs of a possible bounce back to form were visible in the first half of the match.
With just a minute played new signing Martyn Phillips did well to avoid challenges from several Goytre defenders as he ran the ball down the left. He crossed into the box where Leon Young looked to loop the ball over the keeper with a header. Unfortunately for the Ton midfielder his effort went over the bar.
A few minutes later prolific Welsh League goal scorer Richard Ryan was ruled on side as a long ball over the top of the Ton defence landed at his feet. With just Leighton James in the Ton goals to beat from approximately 16 yards out, he sent the ball wide of the right post.
As the first half progressed Goytre were beginning to take hold of the fixture but Ton appeared to dealing well with what was thrown at them.
However, after a Ton move broke down in the 25th minute Goytre played some superb football that tore the Bulldogs apart. Dale Price was involved in some well worked build-up play to allow Chris Summers a chance to find the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Having restarted play from the centre spot Ton failed to retain possession which resulted in immediate pressure as Goytre attacked and won a corner kick. From that corner the ball eventually went into the goal off the post from Ryan’s shot.
Before half time Ton had two excellent chances to pull a goal back, which may have changed the course of the game, but after Dominic Broad first blasted over the bar with one shot and then saw an effort cleared off the line by a defender, the Bulldogs soon realised this was not going to be the case.
Summers gave Goytre a comfortable lead four minutes into the second half when he was allowed time in the box to pick his spot and ten minutes later Ton’s confidence evaporated as Richard French was on the end of a cross from the right to make it 4-0.
The Rhondda Bulldogs failed to muster any kind of scoring opportunity in the second half and Goytre’s convincing win was rounded off by Ryan who was left unmarked wide on the left-hand side where he entered the box on the angle to meet the ball. As James rushed from his goal line Ryan applied a clinical finish to beat the keeper for Goytre’s fifth goal of the match.
Ton need to eradicate this poor form as soon as they can otherwise similar performances will soon see them hurtle towards the foot of the table and the mammoth relegation zone that engulfs five teams due to the reorganisation of Welsh football at the end of the season.
Therefore, the Rhondda Bulldogs have their work cut out before their next match at home to Cambrian & Clydach Vale on Wednesday 18th November at 7.15pm when their local rivals will start clear favourites.
