At the moment Ton Pentre are a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ team as you never know which personality is going to come out onto the pitch. On this occasion it was the latter as the Bulldogs followed up a fine 6-1 midweek win against West End with a drab uninspiring display that saw 10-men Bryntirion boss their way to a 3-0 half time lead.
It was not until the final 15 minutes of this match, after Ton themselves were reduced to 10-men, that the Bulldogs had any kind of bite.
Bryntirion had the full complement of players when they took a seventh minute lead after Nana Baah had chest the ball down for his strike partner inside the Ton box to hit the back of the net for a wonderful goal.
A few minutes later Wayne Antionazzi was released one-on-one with Rory McCreesh and as the goalkeeper came outside his box to meet the Ton attacker he brought him down with a sliding tackle. A free kick was awarded on the edge of the box and McCreesh was fortunate to avoid seeing red as the Referee believed the ball’s eventual destination following Antionazi’s flick did not provide an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
A Bryntirion player was to see red after the Referee’s Assistant brought an incident to the Referee’s attention in the 14th minute. Following a tackle made by a Bulldogs defender, Nana Baah appeared to kick out at the player which resulted in his dismissal.
Ton failed to make their one man advantage count and were made to pay for this in the 41st minute when from a corner kick Leighton James looked as though he had removed the ball from danger after he jumped to catch it on his line, however, the former Pontypridd keeper dropped the ball allowing a Bryntirion player to prod it in making it 2-0.
It got worse for the Bulldogs a minute later when they failed to stop a cross into the box from the wing. Without any kind of challenge Adam Carpenter headed in Bryntirion’s third goal from about 10-yards out to finish a quality passage of play.
The Rhondda Bulldogs needed to improve in the second half but any plans of a hopeful comeback were quickly shattered after Phil Clarke was red carded on 54 minutes. Clarke reacted angrily to being caught by a late tackle and as this reaction was spotted by the Referee’s Assistant Clarke was dismissed for violent conduct.
With both teams now playing with 10 men each Ton started to look a little more creative in attack but despite Chris Jones’ 74th minute goal it was never going to be enough to get back into the match and as a result the Bulldogs were consigned to their sixth league defeat of the season.
