Three goals in three minutes ensured that Caldicot Town left Ynys Park with all the points after they overcame Ton Pentre taking an early lead. The win meant that the Gwent outfit remain second in Welsh League Division One eight points behind Goytre United.
The Rhondda Bulldogs started this game strongly and were quick to edge themselves in front when a free kick sent into the box from midfield found its way onto the head of Tom Davies. The Bulldogs defender directed the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot leaving James Smallcombe helpless.
Ton were dominating play and Caldicot were struggling to find their way to goal, however, disaster struck for the Bulldogs in the 32nd minute when goalkeeper Richard Jeffries spilled the ball after making an easy save from a long range effort. Jason Thorn’s eyes lit up as he ran onto the loose ball and slotted it into an empty net.
The equaliser had a detrimental effect on the home team as Caldicot started to play with devastating confidence.
A simple long ball forward was headed past Jeffries in the 33rd minute by Thorn for an incredible comeback. It got even worse for Ton in the 35th minute when a lovely attacking move was finished off with a well taken goal by Mark Williams, who left the Bulldogs and the rest of Ynys Park absolutely shell-shocked.
In the second half Caldicot’s main objective was to protect their two goal lead and hit Ton on the brake if such a chance arose. As a result Ton dominated possession but were unable to break their opponents down.
Lloyd Toghill, who returned to the Bulldogs from Taffs Well the day before the match, had Ton’s best chance of grabbing a goal back but Smallcombe pulled off a fantastic diving save to tip the ball around the post.
Caldicot have proved to be the league’s surprise package and their grit and determination has certainly helped them to their fantastic second placed position. The defeat they inflicted on Ton Pentre is the Rhondda Bulldogs first of 2010.
