DINAS POWYS 4 - 3 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
march 6th 2010

Dinas Powys gave their performance of the season against Ton Pentre in MacWhirter Welsh League Division One as they outplayed the Bulldogs to come from a goal behind to win all three points. For the neutral this must have been an entertaining match to watch with plenty of goals, action and talking points.

Ton Pentre took a fifth minute lead in this match through Lloyd Toghill after the ball was sent into the box from the right wing. Chris Jones was the first player to make contact with it and saw his shot deflect off a defender into Toghill’s path. The Bulldogs midfielder headed the visitors into the lead to cap off a superb start by Ton.

Going a goal down spurred Dinas Powys into action as they started to play some sublime football that Ton Pentre were finding difficult to defend against.

Dinas defender Lloyd Davies came close to scoring from a free kick when he met the ball in the box with a header that if were on target would very likely have beaten Bulldogs keeper Leighton James.

An equaliser was looking inevitable and it came during the 16th minute of play when Ton conceded another free kick outside of the box. Once again the Bulldogs failed to deal with Davies’s aerial threat as the defender headed back across goal and into the net.

Dinas took the lead through a superb 32nd minute strike that Joe Hinds had unleashed from outside of the box. The striker had spotted space behind the Ton keeper and looped the ball out of his reach and into the goal.

Four minutes later the home team made it 3-1 after Ton failed to stop a cross from the left. Tom Hutton was allowed too much space and as a result was able to send a lovely cross to the far side of the box where Hinds headed in his second of the match.

Bulldogs manager Andrew Hughes was looking for an improvement from his team in the second half and after the first five minutes he appeared to get it.

Following a useful attack Ton saw the ball hit the crossbar before being cleared off the line. Ton however, were left frustrated as Dinas were able to counter attack and when Mark Dunford sneaked around the back of the Bulldogs defence he scored the home teams fourth goal of the match.

On the hour Dinas’s two goal hero Hinds was sent off for a second bookable offence after he failed to retreat from a free kick that Ton were attempting to take quickly.

As a result Dinas were starting to operate more defensively as Ton piled on the pressure.

They finally hit the back of the net following this pressure in the 83rd minute through Toghill, and Leon Young’s 89th minute header made it 4-3 as the Bulldogs ran out of time to find the equaliser.

The Bulldogs face a tough test at Ynys Park on Wednesday, 10th March as Taffs Well are the visitors fresh from their fantastic triumph over table toppers Goytre United on the weekend. The match kicks off at 7.15pm.
