Bridgend Town got a vital win at their Brewery Field ground as they took another step towards MacWhirter Welsh League Division One safety following a poor showing by Ton Pentre who were defeated 2-0.
The Rhondda Bulldogs were certainly more effective in the first half compared to their second half performance and were able to muster up a few half chances.
A ball from the right wing was sent deep into the Bridgend box early on in the half and Alyn Jones brought it down into his possession. The Ton Pentre captain decided to have a shot that continued to rise and go over Neil Collin’ cross bar.
Although they had failed to start well, Bridgend Town did look dangerous on occasions when going forward. The Rhondda Bulldogs were forced to clear off the line following one of these attacks after the ball rebounded around the penalty area as Bridgend desperately attempted to find that killer touch. Fortunately for Ton, Phil Clarke was positioned under the cross bar to punt the ball away to safety.
As the half progressed Ton Pentre looked comfortable without really threatening, however, a long Lloyd Toghill throw-in sent into the Bridgend box caused the home team some difficulty. Tom Davies met the throw at the near post where he flicked the ball onto Leon Young who powerfully connected but headed his effort painstakingly over the bar.
Bridgend looked more assured in the second half as the Bulldogs lacked organisation, and as the match approached the hour mark, Ton Pentre were punished for lacklustre defending when they were forced to clear the ball off the line for the second time, which lead to a corner.
The corner kick was sent to the far post where former Bulldogs captain Ryan Morgan headed the ball back across the box. Bridgend defender Brian Showdery connected to hit the ball into the Ton net making it 1-0.
Moments later Bridgend won another corner and it was a carbon copy of their previous effort but just as the ball was finding its way into the back of the net the Assistant Referee signalled that the goal scorer was offside sparing Ton’s blushes for poor defending.
Ton Pentre were consigned to defeat inside the final ten minutes of the match when Paul Jones connected with a cross from the right to head the ball past Leighton James.
Calvin Mclaggon created Ton’s only shot on target deep into second half injury time when his direct play highlighted a vulnerability in the Bridgend defence but the Bulldogs hit the post with their shot to round off a very disappointing performance.
