TON PENTRE 2 - 1 RISCA UNITED
MacWhirter Youth League
Sunday 27th April 2008
Ton Pentre Youth notched up their eighth league win of the season as they overcame Risca United’s challenge at Ynys Park.
Ton started the better of the two teams and grabbed a deserved goal in the 7th minute of play when the Risca United goalkeeper dropped the ball from a cross into the box. David Jones was alert for the Bulldogs and he took advantage of the error to side foot the ball into the net for 1-0.
Each time they attacked Ton were looking quite useful but their visitors managed to hold on until half time without conceding again.
Ton nearly found themselves two goals up early in the second half when Jack Rowe forced his way through the Risca defence and after wriggling his way into space he struck a shot at goal. Unfortunately for the young Bulldogs the ball was cleared off the line by a Risca defender.
As the half progressed Risca were creating more chances as the Ton defence appeared to lack concentration. On 59 minutes Ryan Betteney was forced to charge out from his goal line to narrow the angle for the Risca attacker. The Ton goalkeeper spread his body well to block the shot and deny a goal.
In the 64th minute Risca were reduced to ten men when one of their midfielders was shown a red card for what appeared to be comments he had made to the Referee.
This seemed to galvanise Risca and they became a real threat in front of goal but Betteney was able to deny them once again when he smothered the ball at point blank range in the 72nd minute.
Betteney was unable to stop them minutes later when Risca outnumbered the Ton defence. As the Ton goalie came rushing from his line he was lobbed by an attacker with an excellent finish.
Ton replied to this in the 82nd minute with a goal that was tickled inside the left hand post from a good attack.
There was no way back for the visitors as Ton comfortably held out until fulltime. The Youth also play Risca in their next league match on Sunday 4th May. The away match kicks off at 2.30pm.
