CARDIFF CORRIES 4 - 5 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Welsh Football Youth League East Division
Sunday 16th September 2007
The Ton Pentre AFC Youth team took part in a hugely entertaining Macwhirter League East game against Cardiff Corinthians Youth played at the Station Road ground in Radyr, writes Ken Dowling.
With strong wind advantage forcing the pace Corries took the lead after 20 minutes with a low shot from the left beating Ton keeper Ryan Betteney from 20 yards. Ton however, found their feet and equalised in the 23rd minute with a powerful shot from 10 yards by winger Johnathan Hood. The player was involved again in the 35th minute when a fast centre field break led to Hood lobbing home goalkeeper Hughes to give Ton the lead.
With Ton now in control they could even afford a penalty miss after 41 minutes by midfielder Nathan Crosby, whose shot was saved low to the keepers left.
After 43 minutes, Ton were not to be denied with a powerful shot inside the area from Hood, giving the keeper no chance making it 3-1 to Ton, and a personal hat trick for the goal scorer.
On the stroke of half time, Corries broke out of the Ton stranglehold with a break down the left wing, with a low cross and sharp shot the home team made it 3-2 at half time.
The second half began with fierce Corries pressure and they were rewarded with an equaliser on 47 minutes.
The game was now end to end but in the 62nd minute Ton were awarded a free kick from 20 yards to the left of goal, and winger Leon Jacka stepped up to curl an unstoppable shot leaving corries keeper Hughes grasping fresh air.
Corries were quickly back in the game after 65 minutes following a cross from the right hand side, and a well drilled shot past keeper Betteney.
Corries were now on all out attack and only a last ditch save with his legs by keeper Betteney kept Ton level on 75 minutes.
Matters deteriorated for Ton when on 79 minutes midfielder Chris Howe was sent off with a straight red card for an unnecessary foul.
The sending off appeared to galvanise Ton and the battling display brought its reward with a 5th and winning goal after 88 minutes when midfielder Crosby converted a low cross from the left with an unbeatable shot from inside the area. 10 man Ton hung on to record their second victory in 2 games at this level.
A well deserved win for Ton and a personal triumph for winger Hood.
The young Bulldogs are in cup action next week with a first round tie with Ely Rangers at Ynys Park in the MacWhirter Youth Division Cup. The match on Sunday 23rd September kicks off at 2pm.
