TON PENTRE 1 - 4 ELY RANGERS
After Extra Time
MacWhirter (Youth Division) Cup
Sunday 23rd September 2007
Ton Pentre Youth’s latest match saw them in MacWhirter (Youth Division) Cup action against a very useful Ely Rangers side who administered the Rhondda Bulldogs with their first defeat of the season after running away with the tie in extra time.
Ton Pentre began the match in a composed manner and they used the ball well all over the pitch. However, as the half went on Ely Rangers began to show that they were a very capable side as they consistently put the Rhondda Bulldogs under pressure.
After surviving an earlier scare when Ton were forced to scramble the ball off the line, Ely Rangers finally got the ball in the back of the net, when from wide on the left an Ely attacker got around his marker to square a pass to his team mate in support. With the player unmarked in the centre Ton goalkeeper Matthew Evans was left with no chance of making a save.
Ton levelled the match during the second half when Leon Jacka took a quick throw-in on the right to Nathan Crosby. He linked well with a fellow team mate in a one-two movement and on receiving the ball back took on several defenders. He kept his composure and finished well for a superb goal.
The Bulldogs could have won the game in the last 10 minutes of the 90 when a long ball up field dropped to Daniel Rowe whose excellent control allowed him a shot at goal. His strike went under the goalkeeper’s body but he was still able to get a hand to it and stop the ball from crossing the line.
The match went into extra time and Ely took the lead in the 103rd minute when good link up play allowed the space to shoot and score.
The match was put beyond Ton in the second half of extra time as Ely won possession of the ball in midfield. As Evans came rushing off his line to narrow the angle the Ely forward chipped the ball over him and into an empty net.
Moments later Ton were reduced to 10 men when Jonathan Hood was sent off by the referee for a second cautionable offence.
In the 114th minute Evans was forced into making two fantastic saves to deny Ely but he was given no chance two minutes later as the visitors were clearly taking advantage of the extra man to score their fourth.
Ton Pentre Youth, sponsored by Jill Evans MEP, are now left to concentrate on the league. Their next fixture will see Cambrian & Clydach visit Ynys Park on Wednesday 10th October 2007. Kick off is 7.15pm.
