DINAS POWYS 1 - 2 TON PENTRE
MacWhirter Youth League
Sunday 11TH November 2007
Ton Pentre Youth grabbed all three points following a lively encounter at the Murchfield ground against Dinas Powys.
The Rhondda Bulldogs opponents, due to latecomers, started the game with 9 men and as numbers dictated Ton pressed with Dinas Powys defending stoutly.
On 9 minutes Ton winger Leon Jacka found himself clear with just the Dinas Powys keeper to beat but he put his lobbed attempt over the crossbar.
Ton Pentre continued to dominate and were rewarded on 21 minutes when a free kick from the right of the Dinas Powys area found Jacka whose low, accurate cross was bundled into the net by forward Chris Bullock making it 1-0 to Ton.
The Ton goalscorer almost doubled his lead five minutes later but was unlucky to see his low, fierce shot strike the outside of the post with the Dinas keeper beaten.
By the 27th minute Dinas Powys were up to a full compliment of 11 men and moments later, following strong Dinas pressure, only a fine save by Ton keeper Ryan Betteney kept the Bulldogs ahead.
Bullock’s height and strength up front for Ton was proving to be a handful for the home team’s defence and on 43 minutes only a last ditch tackle kept him from making it 2-0 to Ton.
The second half began with strong pressure from Dinas but good defending by Ton, in particular by Thomas Davies, kept the home team at bay. However, on 60 minutes Dinas equalised with a scrappy goal after a goalmouth melee.
Dinas were again on top and continued to press and were unlucky on 69 minutes when a furious shot struck a post and fortunately rebounded into the arms of Betteney.
Ton manager John Emmanuel pulled off a masterstroke on 80 minutes replacing goalkeeper Betteney with Matthew Evans but pushing Betteney to centre forward to replace a now tired Bullock.
With 88 minutes played the managers judgement was realised as Betteney struck from an acute angle to score making it 2-1 to Ton and ‘goalkeeper’ Betteney’s second goal in two games.
The Bulldogs held out without further troubles to record a fine victory to add to their recent success away at Ely Rangers. Altogether this was an excellent all round performance by Ton Pentre who are sponsored by Jill Evans MEP.
